Police have nabbed 30 suspects over illegal gambling at Teachers’ estate Nakuru town following a tip off from the members of the public.
Police in-charge of Teachers Police Post, Mercy Musyoka, who led the raid, on Monday said that illegal gambling joints had mushroomed in the area and were also harbouring criminals, drugs and illicit alcohol dealers.
“Of the 30 arrested, 20 are Sudanese refugees whom we found gambling and in possession of illicit alcoholic drinks packed in plastic bottles,” said Musyoka.
The police officer said illegal alcohol dealers were now targeting such joints as easy bait for running their trade.
“Our police officers who were driving around the business centre in private vehicles arrested 20 suspects, including owners and attendants of the gambling dens and also confiscated several sachets of illicit alcohol which we believe were being sold within the joints,’’ said Musyoka.
Paul Ogega, the estate’s security council official, said that many youth were engaging in gambling for money to buy cheap alcoholic drinks and drugs and also to kill time.
“Our council is committed to work with local law enforcers to eradicate crime in our estate,” Ogega said.
