The crackdown was led by Kikuyu sub-county traffic base commander, Inspector Rashid Koko.

The traffic commander, who was speaking to journalists, said that drunk drivers have in the past caused numerous fatal accidents along the southern bypass.

Rashid however, added that they have been able to arrest five drivers who were allegedly over-speeding under the influence of alcohol.

Inspector Koko said that the five were all truck drivers and that driving in that state was risking both their lives and those of other motorists.

He noted that drunk driving was a serious offence, stating that such drivers have in the past caused numerous fatal accidents.

The traffic base commander stated that it is important for drivers to observe discipline when using the roads to avoid accidents during the festive period adding that the traffic department will not rest until they curb such cases.

"During this festive season, I want to warn drivers against speeding and drunk driving which is a great risk to other motorists using the roads," said Koko.

He revealed that most drivers who commit these offences do it early in the morning and late at night assuming that the roads are clear hence cannot cause accidents.

"The five that we have nabbed this morning will be arraigned in court and the law will be tough on them because such offenders pose great risks on our roads," said Koko.
