Police in Eldoret have arrested two suspects linked to the rape and murder of a Moi University student. The student, Charity Maina, was strangled by her attackers, who tore off her clothes.
Angry students staged protests against insecurity at the campus on Sunday. The incident happened late on Saturday night. Vice Chancellor Richard Mibei said calm has returned to the institution.
Maina's body was found near a matatu terminus located next to the gate of the main campus. Rioting students burned down a police Land Rover that had gone to collect the body, which had been detained by the students. Prof Mibei said in a statement yesterday they are working with the police to investigate the incident.
"We look forward to a speedy conclusion to the investigations so that the culprits can be brought to book," he said.Maina was a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Education course.
Colleagues said she may have been attacked on her way to her hostel located near the college gate. She had been studying with other students before she left for her hostel.
"Students have been attacked within the university frequently. We blame the police for failing to secure the university, leading to attacks from gangs," said students' leader Rolex Riziki.
Yesterday, police were still patrolling the area to ensure security.
