Police have arrested Kiguzo Mwangolo Mgutu and Abubakar Jillo Mohamed, who are suspected to have been planning terror attacks in the country.
The two, linked to ISIS attack planner Mohamed Abdi Ali, were arrested on Tuesday.
Spokesperson George Kinoti in a Wednesday evening statement said the two were redicalized at Kangemi Mosque, after which they got recruited into the ISIS network by Ali.
Kinoti said ISIS has been planning retaliatory attacks in Kenya following the arrest of Ali.
The police boss said Mgutu and Abubakar had explosives and other weapons and were to launch attacks in Nairobi and Mombasa.
“Police recovered various materials that were to be used to manufacture and Improvised Explosive Device at Kuguzo Mwangolo Mgutu’s residence in Kangemi. These materials included: nails, ball bearings, batteries, electrical wire, fertilizer, cell phones and other suspected explosive substances which have been taken for forensic analysis,” Kinoti said.
He revealed that the suspects were planning to escape to Syria or Libya after carrying out the attacks.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and assist the police with information on suspicious individuals, and thanked Kenyans for their cooperation to fight terrorism.
Kinoti said Kenyan police have in the past two months arrested eight Tanzanian nationals who confessed to be on their way to join Al Shabaab terror group in Somalia.
