Police in Athi River Police have been blamed for rampant breach of liquor, commonly known as ‘Mututho Laws’.
Addressing press in the town yesterday, Josphat Amin, leader of community policing group in Athi River town said the local police were colluding with the pub and bar operators.
"Pubs and bars in this town do not comply with liquor regulations and laws which regulate the industry because top police officers protect them," said Amin.
Amin disclosed that operators of the joints operated them without licenses, odd hours against stipulated time lines and breach regulatory regulations as stipulated in relevant laws.
He said the police had made it difficult for sanity to be brought to the industry since they collected bribe each day, thereby making the operators arrogant.
According to the community policing leader, the police officers were not worth to be in the region because they had gotten used to people who do not comply with laws.
He called on the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA's) intervention to ensure the top police officers in the station were investigated and if possible transferred in a bid to end corruption which promotes impunity in the region.
