University Academic Staff Union (UASU) officials have been blocked from accessing parliament buildings when they intended to petition legislators concerns that had led to their industrial action that has crippled earning in public universities.
UASU Secretary General Constantine Wesonga said police officers had been deployed to halt their peaceful procession to parliament and had instructed to wait for members of parliament collect the petition from them instead of the officials delivering it.
“We have been denied access to parliament buildings by the police. We are wondering what is happening in this country. The officers told us we can wait for members of parliament to collect our petition from where they had stopped us,” said Mr. Wesonga.
Earlier in the day UASU chairman Muga K’Olale said they had resolved to petition various public sectors to stand in solidarity with their push for enhanced terms of service and remuneration as a way of ensuring sanity is restored to the public universities.
A number of public universities reopened this week but lecturers have vowed to only go back to teaching when their industrial action bears fruits effectively warning it may not matter how long teaching would be paralised.
The officers allowed only three officials to access the precincts of parliament at a time when the lectures strike entered its sixth day.
