Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho skipped Friday’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The governor led other elected politicians aligned to the National Super Alliance (NASA) in skipping the annual event that was held at Tononoka grounds, and presided over by police boss Evans Achoki, Baraka FM has reported.

The celebrations come two days after the resignation of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Roselyn Akombe.

Her resignation attracted mixed reactions from both political divides with NASA leaders terming it as brave and timely.

Leaders of the opposition have maintained that they will only take part in the fresh Presidential election if the electoral body meets its irreducible demands.

They want IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba and other officials thought to have had a hand in the bungled August Elections resigning before the D-Day.

The opposition leader, Raila Odinga, who is taking a fourth stab at the nation’s top seat, has insisted that the commission is not in a position to conduct free and fair polls.

Raila, a former prime minister, has called upon his supporters to conduct nationwide protests on the election date in a bid to frustrate the process.

NASA Leaders from Mombasa have also affirmed that elections will not occur unless the commission heeds to their demands.
