Police in Kisumu have called off all planned demonstrations citing security concerns.

County Police Commander Titus Yoma confirmed that no demonstrations will be permitted in the county due to the heightened political temperatures.

“The reason why we have banned demonstrations is because there is anxiety in the region because of the presidential petition which is in court. We want the process to be concluded then we can allow such meetings once we are satisfied that the situation is calm,’’ he said.

A youth group that had organised peaceful demonstrations to sensitise the youth against engaging in violence and criminal activities, Tuesday, did not take off due to the ban.

Hatutarusha Mawe Tena Youth Group chairman Boniface Akach said the meeting was meant to rally the youth behind peace campaigns.

This follows the Monday’s heckling of Kisumu County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed who was prevented from reading Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri's speech by irate youth during the swearing-in ceremony of Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o.

The County Commander said investigations have been launched to unravel the truth behind the death of six month old baby Samantha Pendo who was allegedly hit by police officers at Nyalenda during the post-election protests.

Pendo succumbed to head injuries at Agha Khan Hospital in Kisumu where she was undergoing treatment.
