There was commotion last night at Munyu Trading Centre in Thika East after police officers believed to be from a nearby Ngoliba Police Headquarters hurled a teargas canister into a drinking den.
This is after the revelers refused to open the door for them, since it was past the legal drinking hours popularly known as 'Masaa ya Mututho', fearing arrest.
Mary Wanjiku, the owner of the pub, said she went past the official drinking hours after a friend pleaded with her to host his guests who had visited him for a get-together.
“When we refused to open the door, one of them broke the window and threw something into my bedroom. The door to my room was locked to prevent my customers from gaining entry from the bar,” said Wanjiku.
Wanjiku said that a few minutes later the police called out to them to open saying that there was fire, something Wanjiku and her customers shoved off thinking it was a plot to have them open then get arrested.
They later saw flames and had to scamper out for safety, with one of the men fainting and sustaining minor burns in his head.
The fire was put off but the revelers and their host were arrested, till they parted with Sh5,000.
According to Thikatowntoday.co.ke, police in Ngoliba police station that is a hundred metres away from the scene have confirmed the incident but denied knowledge on who was involved.
