On Tuesday seven gang members were shot and killed following a gunfight near Makutano market in Kirinyaga County.

According to reports, police officers were led in a speed case by the gang who were suspected to have been part of several robberies in Nairobi.

The police managed to catch up with the suspects and blocked them. They ordered them to surrender but the gang refused and opened fire.

Many traders were forced to flee and others immediately closed their shops.

Witnesses say the gangsters tried to get away but were shot dead in the process. The police further managed to recover two loaded pistols and 10 mobile phones.

Kirinyaga County Police Commander David Kirui was one of the first respondents to the scene and said the suspects had been followed from Nairobi.

"Officers acting on information trailed the suspects who were heading towards Nyeri and gunned them down," said Mr Kirui as quoted by the Daily Nation.

The police men went on to remove the bodies from the crime scene.
