Police officers in Eldoret town on Tuesday arrested 82 youths suspected to be among a criminal gang that has been terrorizing locals.
Eldoret West OCPD Samuel Mutunga said the arrests were made following a major crackdown conducted along the river.
This comes following increased cases of muggings and other criminal activities at the bridge that is also used by traders selling household goods.
Some of the suspects were also found with the illegal Simba Wa Rangi alcohol brand that is usually packed in sachets.
“The bridge had been turned into a den of illicit alcohol as when we rounded those youths we found many sachets there,” Mutunga told the press on Wednesday.
“We conducted this operation following complaints from users of the bridge ad we are glad that culprits have been apprehended,” he added.
The OCPD further said they will keep conducting regular operations in the area until when sanity is restored.
“We will keep changing the mode of our operation on a weekly basis so that we ensure all those involved are arrested and prosecuted,” he added.
The suspects arrested are locked up at the Eldoret Central police station waiting to be arraigned in court.
