Police in Mombasa have distanced themselves from the death of a man who is claimed to have been shot dead over accusations of being a thug. Mombasa police commander Johnston Ipara denied the claims, arguing that the man collapsed and died along Digo Road in the Mombasa Central Business District on Tuesday. He said the man was a member of the street family and has been taking shelter at the Makadara grounds. The police commander said the man had been sick for a while and had been discharged from the Coast General Hospital on Monday, Baraka FM has reported.Ipara further said police officers had confirmed that the man had not died from a gunshot wound.“He was trying to cross the road but unfortunately he fell down and died. We want to clarify that the man was not shot by police as it has been said,” said Ipara, as quoted by the local daily. The police chief said they would inform the man’s family about the incident. The man’s body was taken to the Coast General Morgue. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
