Three police officers have refuted negligence claims in a case probing the death of a British aristocrat, Alexander Monson.

The three are Director of Criminal Investigation Mwenda Ethaiba, police constable Kennedy Mutahi and retired police John Maina.

According to Baraka FM the deceased, who is the son of the 12th Baron Monson died in 2012 at Diani Police Station in Kwale County.

This comes after postmortem results indicated that the deceased had been hit by a blunt object contrary to police claims of drug intoxication

Ethaiba, a witness in the case, told the court that there was no reported incident of violence reported.

He also faulted police officers at the Diani Police Station for failing to tell the court where Monson’s mobile phones were. However, Mutahi denied claims that the deceased died due to negligence by police officers.Mutahi, who was on duty on the material day, said his shift ended at 8.00am but he realised the deceased was not well 30 minutes later.“During the cleaning of police cells, I realized that one inmate was not breathing well and informed a colleague who reported to the OCS,” said Mutahi, as quoted by Baraka FM.On his part, police constable John Miana told the court that he went to the cell after being informed that one of the prisoners was drunk, only to find the deceased lying on the floor.“With the help of other prisoners we carried him out and laid him in the reporting office before I called the OCS,” said Maina.Maina said he was later informed about Monson’s death at around 7pm.
