Pressure continued to pile on police in Kisumu following allegations of police brutality in one of the cells that led to the death of a suspect last week even as they continue to deny the claims.
Kisumu County Police Commandant Nelson Njiri maintained that the deceased was not tortured but had conversions at the cell after an epileptic episode that made him hit his head numerous times on the wall and floor.
"We had no reason to torture the suspect since there was no information we were to force out of him following what he was charged with," said Njiri.
He stated that he has never received any report of torture at the said police cells.
On the conflicting statements by the two officers, Mr Njiri stated that apart from some illnesses which can be seen such as epilepsy, only the doctor can determine what somebody is suffering from and the cause of death.
Meanwhile, residents, human rights activists and family members have continued to question the circumstances under which the deceased, 31 year old Michael Otieno Abonyo was in before he died at the Jaramogi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The mystery in the death of Abonyo has prompted protests from activists who yesterday stormed the Kondele Police Station demanding answers from the authorities, in what they termed a case of extra-judicial killing.
Abonyo is said to have been arrested on Monday on charges that he failed to prevent a felony according to the Occurrence Book at the station.
He was allegedly detained and tortured in the police cells and later died on Wednesday February 10.
The deceased brother John Onyango Abonyo, however, suspected foul play in his brother’s death and demanded for justice claiming the police were not telling the truth concerning his brother’s death.
