Thika deputy police boss Mary Kiarie said the rumours spreading through messages are "fabricated, baseless, unfounded and without facts", that one of the flower companies from the upper side of the river had disposed a dangerous acid in the water two days ago.

Speaking to the press in her office, Ms Kiarie said no resident has been admitted to hospital or deaths reported.

She said the rumours had been sent to several residents through social media and messages not to use the water saying that the rumours was to instil fear and cause panic amongst the residents.

"The rumours started on Monday where the residents started forwarding a message saying the water had been poisoned by the company on the upper side of the river so the residents who live on the lower side had to abandon using the water and started using water from other sources, which police have investigated the matter," she explained.

Ms Kiarie added that anyone who will be found spreading the rumours will be prosecuted for having spread false information as so far, no truth of the matter had been established.
