Police were alerted that thugs had dug a hole at the rear part of the bank’s wall and were planning to bank on the confusion that comes with Christmas celebrations to steal money from the facility.
Kerugoya police Chief David Muiruri who confirmed the incident said officers were deployed near the bank to trap the robbers.
The thugs, however, got wind of the deployment and cancelled the robbery attempt.
The incident happened one month after robbers who appeared to have learnt from an American crime television series dug a 30-metre-long tunnel into KCB bank’s strong-room in Thika Town and stole more than Sh50 million.
The criminals dug the tunnel from inside a stall opposite the Thika divisional police headquarters, where they had been running a bookshop, through which they accessed and stole the money.
Not even the police, stationed just 150 metres away from the bank, noticed any suspicious activity until when the money was discovered missing by the branch manager Samuel Ng’ang’a.
