At least 15 students who were arrested on Friday during protests at the main campus of Moi University following the death of their colleague have been released, according to a statement from the institution.
According to the dean of students, Dr John Ayieko, the students have been freed from Langas police station and have been taken to the campus by a university bus.
The students engaged security officers in running battles on Friday after the dead body of Edwin Kabiru, a third year Education student, was found in his room.
The student is said to have gone out with friends on Thursday evening for a drink at a local bar.
Although the cause of the student is not yet known, there are reports that he was involved in a physical confrontation with a fellow student while they were on their way to the room from the bar.
The body is now at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret.
