Police in Mombasa have shot dead five suspected Wakali Kwanza members following an operation aimed at flushing out criminals in the county.
Confirming the Monday night incident, Mombasa County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said several crude weapons were recovered during the operation.
The commissioner said over 30 gang members have been arrested, adding that they will not relent until the breast-sucking gang is wiped out.
Maalim also said police in the area had wiped out two criminal gangs that have been terrorising residents in Changamwe and Jomvu areas.
Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa had earlier raised concerns over reports indicating that the Wakali Kwanza gang is being financed by a section of politicians with the aim of disrupting next year's poll.
