Police in Nandi county have launched a manhunt for six men said to have raped and injured a mentally challenged woman on Friday.
The woman whose identity has been concealed for ethical and legal reasons is said to have been waylaid by the men aged between 19 and 25 at Mosoriot dragged her into a bush and raped her in turns as she helplessly wailed.
Human Rights activist Judith Tunoi said a class six pupil who was on her way home from school spotted the men executing the heinous act before she screamed attracting neighbours who came to her rescue.
The men, however, vanished before the neighbours' arrival.
The woman was picked and taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town where she was admitted to and is receiving treatment.
The suspected rapists are said to be part of a gang of youth that terrorizes residents in Mosoriot trading centre.
Tunoi said a preliminary examination on the woman indicates her privates parts were damaged and she may develop fistula.
Fistula is a medical condition where a woman constantly leaks urine or stool and the condition can be treated faster during its earlier stage.
She called on well wishers to help raise money to offset the woman's hospital bill which she said may rise because she may stay long in hospital.
