Police have put on notice people intending to destroy the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Railways police boss Rono Bunei said his officers have intensified patrols along the SGR to curb vandalism, The Standard reports.

"The officers manning the railway are on high alert following recent cases of destruction of the SGR. A stern action will be taken against those found destroying the rail," Bunei said, speaking to the press in Nairobi, Monday.

Two weeks ago, the police in Athi River killed a man and arrested another over suspicions they were vandalising the railway.

"Our operations have been fruitful. Recently, one suspect was fatally wounded while one was arrested. Two suspects managed to escape but we are looking for them," said the police boss.

He reported that six pieces of metal plates were recovered from the suspects.

Bunei added that over 13 people have been arraigned since June over claims of vandalising the railway.
