Police in Mombasa have launched investigations into a burglary incident in which Haki Africa offices were broken into. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the activists were in the field monitoring the Jubilee primaries in Mombasa. The thieves stole five laptops and a gas cylinder.Speaking at the offices on Thursday, the organisation's Law and Human Rights enforcement officer Francis Auma said the robbery was properly planned since the thieves did not break any doors.“It seems the thieves knew our programme because they carried out the robbery when were out in the filed. We are worried because the laptops contain very sensitive information about the organization, research reports, donor fund reports among other information concerning the ongoing political party primaries and the August 8 polls,” said Auma.He called on the police to conduct quick investigations and ensure all the culprits involved are netted and taken to court.“We are also calling on the government to ensure that human right defenders are working in a very conducive environment as this trend may be a planned scheme to take data from us,” he added. On his part, Mombasa County Police Commandant Peterson Maeleo assured the human rights lobby that Police were up to the task and those involved will be arrested as soon as the investigations are complete.“We are already carrying on with our investigations and we will soon net all the suspects,” said Maelo.
