Confirming the incident, head of special crime prevention unit Noah Katumo said that the four were suspected to be the ones behind the killing of Nairobi-based businessman Paul Ngigi who was last month shot dead at his home in Kikuyu.

"The suspects are part of a five-man gang operating between Thika and Nairobi. They were killed at 3.30am when they tried to shoot at police officers", said Mr Katumo.

Police revealed that the gang had been pursued from Wangige in Kiambu County after they had committed another robbery before heading for Athi River

The incident brings to light the level of insecurity posed by armed gangs as on Wednesday night three more suspected thugs had been killed in Shauri Moyo and Kibera on separate counts.
