Police in Tana River County have killed three suspected Al-Shaabab militants in Wayu area which is 170 kilometres from Hola Town, on Monday.
The terror suspects are believed to being part of a group responsible for the recent attacks targeting security agents in North Eastern region.
Tana Rivers OCPD Sylvester Githungo who confirmed the incident said the three attackers were killed in a night operation in which several weapons including assault rifles and ammunition were recovered from the suspects who were wearing military issue jungle uniforms.
Mr Githungo said the suspects were gunned down in a shootout with police officers who were pursuing them after they were suspected to be behind the killing of a Tana River County Assembly driver on Friday.
According to the OCPD who was speaking to reporters said the suspects were dressed in similar attire when they shot the driver at close range as he was driving from Garsen to Hola.
“They were all armed with AK 47 guns and were dressed in similar attire as gunmen seen by people driving in a car before the county government driver was killed on Friday,” said OCPD Githungo.
Deputy Commissioner Michael Kioni said the three suspects were planning attacks in the county during the holy month of Ramadhan.
“The suspects were ambushed by police and Kenya police reservists during the night operation and killed in a fierce gun fight,” said Mr Kioni.
