Three gunmen were killed last night in a fierce shootout with police in Ruiru, along the Ruiru bypass.
Speaking to the media this morning, area police boss Isaac Thuranira said officers had done well in the fight against crime, adding that the number of suspected gangsters shot this week amounted to nine, following the killing of six the previous night
He said the suspects had hijacked a man, identified as John Gitonga, and were on their way to his home when the police were tipped off by members of the public and they set a road block to catch the gunmen.
He said the gunmen started shooting at the police when they were confronted and the police opened fire and killed the three, rescuing the abducted man.
The officers also recovered two pistols and three pangas from the suspects.
“This area has been prone for criminals in the past few months but what they did not know is that we knew that there are criminal activities and we have been investigating.
"Now it’s the time to bring to an end all those activities and we are going somewhere if we have got nine within two days. The other criminals thinking of invading our area should be warned because we are watching day and night and we will get them,” the officer said.
The bodies of the three were taken to Thika's General Kago funeral home.
