Matungulu OCPD Joseph Chesire has commended residents for adopting the Nyumba Kumi initiative.

He said ever since the initiative was adopted in the area, cases of crime have declined.

According to the police boss, common crime cases including murder, assault, theft, and rape have significantly dropped.

He said the cases had dropped from 147 recorded in July to 45 in August.

"Both the public and the police department are to be congratulated for this success," he said.

"They have worked hand in hand to ensure people in rural areas solve their issues through intermediate rather than violence."

He made the revelation as he spoke to the media in his office on Tuesday.

The police boss said officers will continue with everyday patrols to ensure security is restored to the area.

“If criminals are convicted and jailed, this tends to instill fear on those who want to commit crime," he said.

"The media is doing a good job by airing such courts reports and showing the price one has to pay for their crimes and I commend them for that."

The police boss urged the public to continue reporting insecurity cases to the police in order to eradicate crime in the county.
