Police in Merti sub-county are looking for poachers who killed an elephant and made away with its tusks.

Speaking at Mataarba location on Saturday, the Deputy county commissioner Julius Maiyo said a local chief informed him over the incident and assured the residents that the police officers have launched a manhunt to get the poachers.

Maiyo said the elephant, which was found on the River Ewaso Ngiro, had been dead for at least two weeks.

“This points to poaching. We have notified the Kenya Wildlife Service over the incident and action will be taken to the suspects once our officers nabs them”, Maiyo said.

He however blamed locals for not volunteering to give information that could lead to arrests.

Maiyo noted that the area has not experienced poaching for a while despite elephants roaming.
