Government officials have launched an operation to establish the whereabouts of the girls said to be students of St Andrews Secondary School.

The incident comes less than a year after four other girls from area vanished only to be traced in Mombasa.

Simon Mwaniki, a resident of the village said on Tuesday that parents of the students first reported the incident to the area police station after the four girls failed to return home from school.

he said one of the students, two days after going missing called her parents telling her that she was fine before switching of the phone.

"We suspect foul play because someone could be using the innocent girls for their own selfish gains and police are investigating the incident," Mwaniki, an elder told Radio Jambo.

Musa Lokioror confirmed the incident saying the case is being handled by police who have commenced investigations.

He said reports that reached his office claimed that two of the girls lured their two friends to visit a relative in Nairobi.

"That was the last time they were seen," Lokioror said.
