Detectives in Mombasa are probing the alleged loss of subsidized government maize valued at Sh5 million.
Over 1,220 90-kg bags disappeared on the transit to Eldoret under unclear circumstances.
According to The Star, the drivers of trucks, which were carrying the maize, are said to have parked them in the late hours of the night at a yard due to lack of fuel before the loss.
Police suspect that the loss was a well-planned operation pending investigations.
“This was a well-calculated crime. The trucks were driven at midnight, dumped several metres away and the maize off-loaded to waiting trucks which we are yet to trace,” an officer, who sought anonymity told the Star.
Confirming the incident, Changamwe DCI boss Francis Wanjahu, said police have arrested one of the suspects to assist with investigations.
The police boss alludes that truck drivers are likely to have colluded with the suspects to steal the maize, adding that investigations will soon be concluded.
“We are very optimistic...all those involved will be brought to book. We have good leads."
This is after 1.2 million bags of maize arrived in the country on June 19 as the government strives to fight the severe flour shortage.
