Coast Regional police boss Noah Mwivanda said the ban has been lifted because he was not the one who issued it.

Speaking on Friday in Mombasa, Mr Mwivanda said that only the Coast Regional Commissioner or himself can issue such an order.

“Night weddings can continue. We have no authority over such. If I am not aware, then that is a rumour. Don’t follow such. The curfew or night movement ban must come from me or the Regional Commissioner Bernard Leparmarai,” said Mr Mwivanda as quoted by Daily Nation.

The police boss further said that security situation in the area has been restored in parts of Majengo and Old Town where the gangs were terrorizing residents attending wedding ceremony.

Mr Mwivanda has however asked organizers of weddings to notify security agents when conducting such events in areas they feel insecure.

“We have moved in and done all that is humanly possible to tame the situation and they are no longer there and if they are may be isolated cases,” he added.

The night ban was issued last week by County Police Commander Johnston Ipara after a gang of youths were roaming in various parts of the county targeting women who attend night weddings and stealing from them.

Mr Ipara had said that the police will not allow wedding ceremonies to be conducted at night unless proper security arrangements are made by those who want to be issued with permits.
