Northeastern regional commissioner Mohamud Saleh has said investigations are ongoing to bring to book suspects who torched Garissa’s market last week.

In the fire incident that happened after Governor-elect Ali Korane was announced the winners, businessmen lost property worth millions.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Saleh said they have made progress and the culprits will soon be arrested.

He took the opportunity to thank the locals for being peaceful throughout the electioneering period.

“We have the names, mobile phones, videos and pictures of the main suspects. They can run but they cannot hide,” Saleh said as quoted by The Star.

“I urge NGOs and other well-wishers to assist the victims of the fire,” he added.

“This is the tradition of Northeastern, we have never had election-related violence,” he added.

The fire incident has in the last few days attracted attention from leaders and politicians as well; with the incoming governor Ali Korane saying the fire was politically related since it happened immediately after he was announced the winner.

Outgoing governor Nathif Jama on the other hand has distanced himself from the fire, saying he had nothing to do with it.
