Police officers in Nyamira County have nabbed over 2000 kilograms of contaminated sugar amid heavy crackdown.
According to criminal investigations officer, Victor Ndumba, members of the public tipped police officers that one of the retail shop purchased sugar few days ago and the packing process was ongoing before the commodity could be sold to the public.
“Members of the public alerted police over the contaminated sugar at the retail shop store and we raided the store where we found sugar from a Brazilian company, Diamond Sugar limited and Sukari Industries from Ndhiwa,” he said.
Ndumba said police officers have launched a manhunt for the retail shop owner who has gone into hiding.
“Members of the public should help police to arrest the shop owner who escaped arrested. No one is above the law to sell fake products.
"Residents should be vigilant to ensure they don’t consume contaminated products which may end up infecting them with diseases,” he said.
He said local kiosks and shops in the region must also ensure suppliers are supplying products which have been commended by KEBS.
