Anti-corruption sleuths in Mombasa have arrested a policewoman who was allegedly caught on camera receiving a Sh1,000 bribe from a motorist on Wednesday. The suspect, who is a constable from the Tourist Police Unit was nabbed at the Likoni Ferry Channel’s mainland after a resident from Ukunda allegedly caught her receiving the bribe on his camera.According to Mombasa Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) deputy boss Salat Ali, the officer allegedly asked for the bribe on grounds that the motorist was driving a vehicle with a broken windscreen.Salat condemned the incident, saying it was unfortunate that a police officer who should be on the front line in fighting graft was the one propagating the vice.He pointed an accusing finger on corrupt police officers, arguing that such bad elements in the force are to blame for the increase in the number of road accidents. He said EACC detectives would arraign the said officer before a court of law and charge her with bribery.Elsewhere, a court in Mombasa on Thursday released a man who had been accused of assaulting a female police officer on a cash bail of Sh50,000.Ali Kambi was arrested on December 3 in Changamwe over claims that he had assaulted Winnie Wangari after she asked him to produce his driving licence after his vehicle’s tyre was found to be defective. He, however, denied the charges. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
