A police officer was on Sunday morning shot dead in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area along Juja Road during a matatu robbery.
It is said that the robbers had carjacked the matatu to rob the passengers of valuables and when they realised the victim was a police officer, they shot him dead and escaped on foot.
According to the Star, the victim of the incident that took place at 11 AM near St Teresa was later identified as Sergeant Abdiaziz Hussein of Eastleigh Airbase Chief’s Camp.
The bus driver recounted hearing noise from the passengers followed shortly by three gunshots.
"There was a lot of noise followed by gunshots and when I stopped I realised Hussein had been shot and the gunmen had escaped on foot," he said.
Police have since confirmed the incident and said that after completing his duty, Hussein had boarded the matatu oblivious of the fact that it had already been carjacked.
"He had finished his duty and was leaving for his house in Eastleigh when he boarded the matatu that had apparently been carjacked from Kariokor. The gunmen who were busy ransacking the passengers of their valuables and cash shot him when they realised he is a police officer," police said.
No arrests have been made as police begin investigation into the incident.
