A police car on Wednesday rolled in an road accident at Savanna Cement Company along Nairobi-Namanga Road in Athi River town.
Eye witnesses said the speeding land cruiser belonging to the Mlolongo Police Station was trying to overtake another vehicle when its driver noticed an on coming vehicle making it lose control leading to the accident since the driver could not control it.
Athi River Police boss Kizito Mutoro said the vehicle was ferrying inmates from the Mavoko Law Courts to Athi River GK Prisons in Kitengela town when the 5.20pm accident happened.
Mutoro said nine inmates and four police officers were aboard the vehicle when the accident occurred.
He disputed the claims by eye witnesses that the police vehicle was over-speeding and trying to overtake leading to the accident.
According to Mutoro, the driver of the vehicle was trying to avoid a pedestrian who was crossing the road at the point before hitting a pole by the road side making the vehicle roll.
Mutoro said all the inmates and three police officers sustained minor injuries while one police officer was seriously injured.
He said all the officers and inmates were admitted at Shallom Community Hospital in Athi River while the vehicle toed to Athi River Police Station.
Mutoro said there was no casualty though in the incident that caused traffic snarl upon the road for more than three hours.
