Garissa police have been placed on high alert over reports of possible attacks during the Jubilee party primaries in the county.
According to the regional Peace Committee secretary general Hassan Osman, intelligence reports indicate that criminals might be planning to stage attacks during the nominations process and so is the need to be extra vigilant.
“We are very much aware that there are some individuals who might not necessarily be supporters of any politician and may want to use the chance to commit crimes and carry out all sorts of evil things. We do not want to see such scenarios and that is why we have placed our security officers on high alert," said Osman.
Disclosing security measures already in place, Garissa police chief Aaron Moriasi said police will ensure that law, peace and order prevails during the electioneering period.
“As security stakeholders, we would like to see a situation where the aspirants themselves take the lead in matters of national security. However, we shall never allow any of them or their respective supporters to engage in hooliganism,” he said.
Moriasi also added that police would provide security while treating all political aspirants equally regardless of their political offices held.
