Residents of Mwembe estate in Kisii have blamed the police for the increase of illicit brews in the area.

According to the locals trading and consumption of illicit liquors in the area have been on the rise as the police officers are extorting money from the illicit brewers instead of preventing the unlawful business.

Led by Evans Ayiera the residents claimed the unscrupulous police officers were collecting bribes from the brews suppliers and boat owners who transport illicit substances from the villages regularly.

“The government should launch investigations to know why there is increase of liquor dens and we are ready to help them identify the corrupt police officers who collude with the owners and who collect bribes daily,” said Ayiera.

They claimed that there were over 100 dens operating illegally with police  in Kisii adding that this has thwarted the attempts by chiefs to raid the premises.
