Detectives from Thika Police Divisional headquarters have opened a tunnel that thugs used to gain access to KCB bank.
Using an excavator, the tunnel which was 10ft deep from the ground and two feet wide was reinforced with metal rails and wood planks to avoid collapsing.
Other items that were discovered include a welding gas cylinder, gas mask, planks of wood for supporting the tunnel, cartoons for ferrying the sand, overall, spirit level, battery and invert for lighting the tunnel among other things.
Economic and Political Advisor to the governor David Kariuki Ngari who also visited the crime scene said that this investment will enable the law enforcement and security agencies to fight crime and discourage criminals from committing the crime. “It is very rare for anyone to commit a crime when they knew that their actions were being monitored and recorded on camera. He noted that the surveillance footage was always a crucial piece of evidence during a police investigation.” Said Ngari.
The operation that was carried the whole of yesterday afternoon attracted onlookers who were eager to see how the robbers gained access to the building.
Following the robbery, Kiambu County government plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in streets and businesses along banks and other financial institutions with the stated goal of reducing crime and increasing public safety.
