Governor Hassan Joho has claimed police plan to disrupt elections in Mombasa to ensure few residents vote on Tuesday.
Joho, at a press conference, however, said he will do everything at his disposal to ensure majority residents turn out and vote.“My call to everybody in authority is that please stay away from implementing illegal instructions,” the county chief said Monday flanked by Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Mboko and MPs Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), Abdulswamad Nassir (Mvita) and Badi Twalib (Jomvu).“I want to remind you this is our country. And if you are not careful, we will spoil our country.”Joho said Kenyans demand nothing other than a free, fair and credible election.“We need to see a credible election. My call to the police officers, the military, the county commissioners, regional coordinators including this one of ours (Nelson Marwa) that we shall hold individuals responsible for implementing illegal instructions,” the ODM deputy party leader said.He said he has information of a new last minute push to employ 50 new polling clerks.“We know there could be issues of capacity and if you were recruited as a clerk, presiding officer or returning officer you must undergo specific training,” he said.“So we don’t understand why there would be a last minute push to bring in new names. Unless there is an undertaking from IEBC to ensure these people are properly trained, then we are going to have a problem.”
