The President while in Meru during the burial of three bishops killed on a road accident along the Embu- Mwea highway said that NTSA officers should be withdrawn from the roads with immediate effect.
In an exclusive interview on Citizen TV’s breakfast show, Owino said that the directive will see traffic police officers concentrate on their work of law enforcement and NTSA work on the formulation of policies.
“What the President did was procedural because according to the law, NTSA is not supposed to implement laws but only formulate policies to be implemented on the roads,” Owino said.
In addition, the Police Spokesperson expressed support and confidence in the Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security Dr. Fred Matiang’i comparing him to the late John Michuki.
“I think we have a new Michuki in the Ministry of Interior and he might do well. All we can say is to wish him all the best and hope that all Kenyans are going to give him the support he deserves,” he added.
Kenyans have shown support for the President’s directive to withdraw NTSA from the road with many saying that the safety authority has done very little to reduce road carnages in the country.
