Kakamega OCPD Joseph Cheboi said on Friday that police are also puzzled by the incident because the school is under 24-hours surveillance by security guards.

The Form Two girl from Matende Girls High School in Lurambi said she was a sleep when she woke up feeling pain in her private parts.

The girl whose identity has been concealed because she is a minor said she felt a heavy load on her prompting her to wake up only to realise someone was on top of her and her underwear had been removed.

She screamed to alert colleagues but the man vanished into darkness as there was a power black out in the school on that day.

She was taken to the Kakamega Provincial General Hospital for treatment and examination. Doctors established there was penetration and a report filed by the health facility said the girl had been raped.

Cheboi accused the school's authorities for not being vigilant as the dormitories at the institution are normally not locked.

He called on residents near the school to volunteer information that may lead to the arrest of the runaway rapists.

"We will do out best to ensure justice for the girl revails," he said.
