Police officers in the Coast region have started receiving training ahead of the 2017 general election, to provide security in the region.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) said the move is aimed at ensuring next year's polls are not marred by violence.
NCIC Commissioner Mr Roba Sharabo said the government is determined to ensure they have enough officers to provide effective security during elections.
Addressing journalists at a Malindi hotel, Mr Sharabo said the officers will also be trained to identify hate speech.
He said police officers will be provided with recording gadgets to capture all conversations in weddings, burials and in rallies, among other activities.
The commissioner said the training will enable the hate speech cases to be pursued and investigated before they are sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for prosecution.
“We have started a platform known as ‘tuwe na WIANO wa Kenya’, aimed at bringing communities together in peace dialogue to build infrastructure in getting early warnings,” he said.
“The National Police Service will also be trained in enforcement, monitoring and investigation of hate speech for peace and cohesion during this campaign season,” he added, as quoted by Kenya News Agency.
He also urged politicians to conduct peaceful campaigns and demonstrations as well as obtain licenses before the demonstrations.
