One Prison warder died as several others suffered varying injuries in the accident which occurred at the Mamboleo black spot on February 5.

Kisumu County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said the Ceska pistol was found rusting away by a cleaner at the Avenue Hospital in the lakeside town. Its serial number, he said had been verified.

"The Ceska that was lost during the accident was found wrapped in a polyethene bag within the hospital's compound by a cleaner. Someone realised we would catch up with him because we were pursuing reliable leads," said Maalim.

He said a magazine loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene of the 5pm accident. However, it was neither immediately reported that the pistol was missing nor that the loaded magazine found.

"The recovery of the firearm does not bring the investigation to a conclusion, we will get to the bottom of it," said Maalim, calling on residents to volunteer any information that could bring culprits to book.

The officers were returning from the burial of a colleague in Kakamega when the driver lost control of the 60-seater bus and crashed into an electric pole at the notorious spot near the Coptic Church, Nyanza Regional Traffic Police Commandant Andrew Naibei reported.
