One among the seven G 3 rifles said to have been stolen from Booker police station in Mumias has been recovered with three suspects arrested.
According to police who were working on a tip-off from the public, the gun was found hidden near a river in a sugarcane farm.
Three people allegedly planning a robbery were also arrested.
The gun was loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition.
Police officers said they found the suspects near the scene at Mayoni market and they (suspects) sped off on a motorbike when challenged to stop.
Confirming the incident, western region police commandant Moses Ombati said that officers laid an ambush around the scene after the public tipped them on a robbery planned by an armed gang.
“Our officers were able to detect the gun using special gadgets brought in from Nairobi after receiving a tip-off about the activities of the three suspects at Mayoni market,” said Mr Ombati.
