The names and photographs of 24 gang members were released on Thursday after they were linked to a series of crimes especially in Old Town.

The 24 are part of the Old Town Youth Gang, which is said to be a splinter of the Wakali Kwanza and Wakali Wao gangs that operate in Likoni and Kisauni.

According to The Star, members of the gang walk in groups of 10-15 members wielding knives and pangas, and mainly target women, children and security agencies. The gang is said to have started off as a football team, but members started robbing residents to sustain their lavish lifestyles and get money to buy drugs.

Mahsia alias Dogo Presso and Mohammed alias Bobocha have been identified as the key leaders of the gang.

Mombasa police boss Lucas Ogara has however said cases of insecurity have reduced in the area, adding that efforts by police to fight crime and tame gangs in the county are paying off.

“We have seen a decline in the number of robberies and cases of stabbing in Old Town in the last month. We need public support to completely wipe them out," he said, as quoted by The Star.
