Police reports have revealed that Public Works Principal Secretary Maryam El-Maawy had been shot in the chest, fractured her hand and suffered severe burn following an Al Shabaab attack.
The police report states that her vehicle was attacked in Milihoi area along the Lamu-Mpeketoni highway on Thursday
Fortunately, the PS was saved by KDF officers who were alerted of the incident that left two people dead and several injured.
According to the report El-Maawy’s vehicle was hijacked along with a lorry by the milita and taken into Boni Forest.
The report also stated that the vehicle rolled and burst into flames after being caught by the police.The KDF soldiers were swift to take the PS to Mpeketoni sub-county hospital where she was later flown to Nairobi.
"She was flown to Manda Navy base in Lamu awaiting evacuation to Nairobi for further treatment," the report states as reported by The Star.
Maryam is undergoing treatment in Nairobi and police say one of the bodies recovered at the scene was burnt beyond recognition.
Police believe the body belonged to Godana Poran who was with the PS at the time of the attack. Transport was brought to a halt for several hours as police attempted to apprehend the criminals.
This attack follows a series of events in the area. Recently two police officers were shot and killed in Pandanguo, while days later, seven locals were beheaded in Poromoko.
