Police in Kuria East Sub County have rescued 40 girls who were allegedly being ferried to a rescue center in Tanzania by a fake pastor and two other men at the border of Kenya and Tanzania.
Kuria East Deputy County Commissioner, Wesley Koech, said the girls have been taken to Komotobo rescue center while the three men are being held at Ntimaru Police Station.
“The three are being interrogated by the police to establish the truth since their motive is not clear, they claim they were rescuing the girls from FGM but we want to establish the truth,” said Koech
“There are standards and regulations that govern a process like this, there action of taking the Children to a foreign Country without due certification is equivalent to illegal,” he added
Koech said they also want to establish how the pastor managed to round up the 40 girls from the region.
“Police in the region have put in place enough modalities to ensure that no girls undergo FGM this year,” said Koech
The rescue of the girls comes at a time when the Kuria community is preparing to carry out the FGM, which is an outlawed cultural practice in Kenya.
