Police in Marani, Kisii on Monday rescued two suspected thieves from angry residents who wanted to lynch them.
Winfred Omwenga, an eyewitness, said the two had been tracked down for months before they were found in possession of stolen items in the township.
“The two have been stealing from people for quite some time. They were found with stolen electronics believed to have been stolen on Saturday as they were preparing to leave for Kisii town,” said Omwenga.
He added that the mob wanted to kill the two before police from Marani police station rushed to rescue them.
Marani OCPD Boniface Kimwele confirmed the incident and hailed the police for rescuing the two.
“Yes we are aware of the two young men currently in our custody. They were almost killed but thanks to our officers who rescued them,” said Kimwele.
He urged residents to refrain from engaging into acts of lawlessness and instead involve the police whenever such cases arise.
“No one is supposed to take the law into their own hands. It is suicidal and that is why our people should always involve the police to curb such incidents,” added the police officer.
