Two suspected thieves on Friday escaped lynching by Egerton University, Nakuru campus students who accused them of defrauding their colleague of money and mobile phone.
The two who had earlier been arrested by a police officer next to the campus gates found themselves in the varsity's compound after another student requested the officer to let them solve the issue with the university's security manager.
However things later got out of hand when more students got wind of the information and descended on the two suspects with kicks and blows.
"These are the people who steal laptops and phones from us, we cannot let them go," charged one student.
The officer who was by then overwhelmed pleaded with the students to let him solve the matter since he was a law enforcer.
"Kindly let me deal with these suspects because they are now under the arms of the law. I brought them here so that your security too can help solve this issue," pleaded the officer as more kicks and blows descended upon the cornered suspects.
A lady identified only as Maureen and who claimed to have been defrauded by the two suspects narrated that she was approached by the two men who told her to give sell them her phone and in exchange for a better one and some extra cash.
She added she did as requested and after that she was handed a dummy phone and pieces of paper disguised as money inside an envelope.
"They men ended up taking away my phone and money at an absolutely free charge," she quipped.
The two men were however whisked to safety to an office by the police officer with help from the campus' security.
