Activist Boniface Mwangi has called upon the user of the @PolisiNiRafiki Twitter handle to hand it over to the police to help them air their ongoing grievances.
This comes after the police opened another Twitter account, @PolisiNiRafiki1, to fight for better terms in the police service.
On Monday, a host of graduate police officers tendered in their resignation after their salaries were slashed by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) with some receiving as much as negative pay.
"In 2012 we organised a pro-police protest and marched all the way to parliament. Today serving police officers have opened a twitter account @polisiNiRafiki1 to fight for better terms. If you own @PolisiNiRafiki handle, you can hand it over to them. #PolisiNiRafiki," tweeted Mwangi on Wednesday.
However, the reception of the idea has not been positive as most Kenyans believe that the police cannot be friends to anyone.
Some of the reactions to the idea include:
@NjagiErick8 @bonifacemwangi @PolisiNiRafiki1 @PolisiNiRafiki They killed my able SeC Gen Meru university is that a "RAFIKI"Am now Anti-police
@Mustafadae1 @bonifacemwangi @PolisiNiRafiki1 @PolisiNiRafiki Polisi hananga urafiki
@AnotherKenya @bonifacemwangi @PolisiNiRafiki1 @PolisiNiRafiki If what police did to baby Pendo and Mutinda is what "Rafiki" do, sitaki Rafiki...
NPSC Chair Johnston Kavuludi has since denied the pay cut and has however pointed out that the commission is carrying out an audit of what the police officers are supposed to receive as salary.
“Nobody has had pay cut but we are carrying a human resource and payroll audit to determine who has what it takes to receive a certain salary,” reiterated Kavuludi on Monday as quoted by Nation.
