Police in Kisumu have said the attack on women attending an inter-faith peace meeting at a local hotel was not politically motivated.
County DCI boss Geoffrey Kathurima told the media that they are handling the incident as a purely criminal case, adding that three people have already been arrested in connection to the attack that left several women injured.
"Some of the suspects were positively identified by the victims, including by name. We are keen on apprehending all of them because this was purely a criminal act," Kathurima told the Standard.
On Wednesday, youths assaulted the women following a social media post that alleged the group was buying identity cards from NASA supporters to stop them from taking part in the October 17 repeat poll.
The organisers of the event, the Kenya Women of Faith Network (KWFN), has condemned the violence, pointing an accusing finger at the local ODM leadership.
"The disruption of a peaceful apolitical meeting of religious women is cowardly and cruel. It must be condemned by Kenyans," said Sabina Ng'ang'a, KWFN chairperson.
